THE BAMILEKE PEOPLE and organizers of Yemba U.S.A CELEBRATED THEIR 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY IN NEWARK NEW JERSEY 07/01/2023

Did you know the city of Newark has five sister cities? 

Douala, Cameroon is one of them. 

Establishing its independence in 1961 the country is known for its rich agriculture, roads, railways, and petroleum industries. 

It is located in the West Central region of Africa. Some of the nations that border Cameroon include Nigeria, Chad,  and the Republic of Congo. 

The country is often described as a country of many countries or Little Africa, due to its diverse ethnic population, languages, and geographic landscapes. 

The Bamileke people are one of the largest ethnic groups. They are grass- fields people that inhabit the northwest region. The Yemba is the major language spoken and Its literal translation means to sing.

• Traditionally Bamileke people are governed by a king named Fo.  He is the spiritual and administrative leader with direct connections to God and the ancestors. Under his leadership, he guides and looks after the welfare of the community.

• The Bamilke culture is rich in art, known for its beautiful wooden sculptures, symbols, and patterns that are inspired by nature and their belief system.

• Patterns are used to make quilts and clothing. There are 16 Bamileke patterns. They each represent various things such as social class, lineage, social hiarchy, procreation, power and strength. (source)
